Gull Gallery InWorldz

Gull Gallery est 2008 Second Life now InWorldz 2014

We are Back! Gull Gallery Virtual art Gallery is back on the Grid InWorldz!
I know it's been a while, but I have built a new gallery in InWorldz and will be featuring both RL and Virtual exhibits. The First Showing scheduled in January will be called the Journey into color and light by Tracy Maxfield.

A Selection of works by Featured artist Tracy Maxfield will be shown in Gull Galery's first show THE JORNEY coming in January

Tracy's art is reflective of her positive inner light and natural childlike optimism in the face of tragedy.
A breast cancer survivor and caregiver to her mother who suffers from Parkinson's disease, Tracy's mixed media designs serve as an everyday  inspiration to all who walk with her on this journey. You can view some of Tracy's work HERE now.

Other exhibits in the gallery will feature URL directs to Blogs, websites and other Virtual exhibits, depicting well known as well as perhaps not so well known artists their crafts and services.

If you are an artist and would like to be featured in the gallery contact Aire Xaris in Second Life, Inworldz, or  airexaris@yahoo.com

Exhibits are Free! and are a great way to drive web traffic to your website or online store.

Avatar Skins

I suppose I should start at the Beginning..
An avatar is a representation of you in cyberspace. It can be anything from a simple graphic, (jpeg, png, tga file) or animated gif. to a sophisticated three dimensional digital being that you can control and move around in a virtual simulated world.

An avatar can be anything you imagine from a bowl of soup to a fire breathing Dragon. I won't go into 3d modeling too much, but if you click on the title abave the picture of Chip midnight's torso mesh it will bring you to wiki's explanation of meshing, and will give you a better idea of 3d models and the platform in which they exist.
What I make are called skins. I use mesh templates designed for use within Second Life, (an online virtual world, or Metaverse) and I sell them on SLX (Second Life Marketplace as well as on my own sim called Gothica Skins.

In world, as in the marketplace, the commerce is global and the currency is known as Lindens ~so $ look like this L$s.
lindens are bought sold and traded just like any other market place in the world, and their exchange is known as the Lindex.
There is no actual conversion until Lindens are cashed out through something like Paypal.
Avatar skins can be created in a multitude of photo enhancing or manipulating software that allows you to work with layers.
I work primarily in Adobe Photoshop & Gimp, but I also fall back on Corel and a simple 3d modeling software called Av Painter.

Chip's Texture maps are great for matching up the seams when overlaying, but for the purpose of skins, I use baked textures such as these, that are free downloads.

I take my own renders, (hand painted layers) and overlay them to form something that looks like this

I piece the layers together, touch up the seams in a 3d modeling software called Av paint, and then upload the final textures in tga format to Second Life and viola!

(Touching up seams in Av Paint.

This is my avatar, (Aire Xaris) wearing the skin I just created.

Content Creation for Second Life

When I stumbled across an ad in a forum about making extra money as a q&a person for an online meta verse four years ago, I had absolutely no clue what that was. The fact that it was on an adult site made me even more skeptical, as well as a bit Leary to even click on the link, but like a lot of things I had always experienced in life, that turned out not to have killed me, I became bored halfway through reading the directions and just closed my eyes and jumped ~ or in this case, clicked on the link.

Essentially, Red Light Center was a three dimensional social site, where people from all over the world could log onto a server, download a browser, and walk around a 3d representation of Amsterdam where sex drugs and rock n roll were the theme.
The problem was BUGS. The software was choppy at best, gamers would be tossed off the servers constantly and the graphics were crap.

I found out I could make a few extra bucks testing the software, and I really didn't need to know that much about the inner workings of how it actually functioned, essentially all I had to do was use the software for free and report on any bugs I came across in game.
The pay was minimal, and because the uploads and graphics sucked so bad, even creating components for these 3d representations of ourselves, (known as avatars), became tedious after a while.
I named my avatar AIRE (avatar information retrieval entity) pictured in the skin I made for her using Adobe Photoshop and Chip midnight's avatar Mesh templates.
In Second Life, (One of the largest online metaverses in the world) there are so many content providers, (artists who literally create these worlds known as sims), that we are assigned last names when creating our accounts and avatars.
My avatar there is called Aire Xais.

I found myself creating more avatar components in Second Life, than testing bugs in Utherverse, and I ended up deleting the 3d client altogether, opting to become a full time content provider in SL.

Objects in Second life are known as "Prims" or primitives. essentially it is a 3d object created in world that can be morphed or molded into just about anything you can imagine. these objects can be scripted to perform tasks such as fly, play media, resize themselves and stretch the imaginary boundaries of online physics.

Being the small minded idiot I was and still am ;), I was completely ecstatic when I created my first box- like object and manipulated a sound script to make it fart whenever another avatar came in contact with it. (I'm actually still kind of proud of that :)

But I was not cut out for the tedious and incredibly time consumimg art of learning and manipulating SL's scripting language, so I stuck with what I already knew ~ ART.

this is a scripted object in SL Kknown as Zoltar. You can click him on and he becomes animated just like a RL, (real life) pupet fortune teller you might see at a State Fair or Carnival, only fortunes where modified to fit the 3d world.

I began simply by uploading my artwork into world, and creating my own gallery, known as Gull gallery, for which this blog is named afetr. One of the first gallery showings I had featured some of my artwork and a friend of mine I had met while in Q&A forums back at utherverse, an artist and kindered spirit known as Spikey Velvet.

Gull Gallery promotion.

This too was an exersize in epic fail, 1) because just about everyone else in SL had some sort of an art gallery, and attracting RL artisits to pay for web space on a online metaverse was a hard sell, when you consider that most people had never heard of such a thing.

I returned to my first love ~ farting boxes.

Avatar components are prims that you create in world or in 3d software and can be uploaded then attched to your avatar.

In this picture my avatar is holding an attachable cat and sporting a pair of sunglasses.

In my next Blog I will cover the discovery of avatar skin design.

Market Day by SL Merchant Guild

~::~ What is Market Day? ~::~

In many real life communities of any size, you can find merchants gathering in a downtown or town square area for at least one day a week. Oftentimes, they vend fresh foods straight from a farm or seasonal items right before a holiday. For Second Life, we will gather together to give residents a singular location to see many vendors of certain types on THREE days in our Inaugural Market Day Week April 5-9. On these days, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we will have vendors from all product and service areas come together on a single sim--Elizabeth Town sponsored by Laura Liberty--to demonstrate a sense of community not only among the merchants of SL, but with residents new and seasoned. When possible entertainment or music will be planned that fits the first three themes we'll experiment with: Role Play Monday, Furnishings Wednesday, and Fashion Friday. The market will last an entire 24 hours from SL midnight to SL 11:59 pm on the given market days. The sim will be closed for sales on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for preparation for the following Market Day.

~::~ What's in it for you? ~::~

EXPOSURE & hopefully sales :) This is mostly an opportunity to be seen and interact. While you may realize a few sales, I expect that You'll have plenty of prim to rez goods, but your best benefit will come from getting seen and known for the relationships you choose to create both with potential customers and with your merchant family. There is MAJOR long-term potential in this project profitable for any subsidiaries you may choose to pursue and especially for giving new merchants the kind of mentoring we either wish they had, or wish we'd had. In the long run, better relationships all around equate to better sales. We could all use those...

~::~ How do I sign up, and where? ~::~

An application will be put into notices within the next few days. Read the info carefully and resubmit your application. We will contact any merchants who can be accomodated. At that point your rent will be due (listed in the application), and applicable for your assigned day. Vendors with paid and approved applications will be assigned to a given week and will have rez rights for their designated week. DO NOT pay your rent to the group! Please pay S0phie Sautereau directly as your transaction ID is your receipt. A landmark will be made public, so even if you don't get in this week, we will contact you about a subsequent week to participate. Vendors will be listed for each week via notecard notice. We encourage EVERY group member to participate in Market Day by attending and supporting this community, however, giving out LM and spamming visitors NOT on your given market day will get you booted and potentially banned from sim and/or group.

Market Day Is April 7th 2010
APRIL 7 MARKET DAY by SL MERCHANT GUILD

This is the *OFFICIAL* Market Day hosted by Aire Xaris and sponsored by SL Merchant Guild, a coalition of merchants in Second Life committed to bringing a sense of COMMUNITY to Second Life commerce! The ultimate goal of the Guild's Market Day is "1 sim, 1 week, 100s of merchants" offering residents a peek at what they offer and a chance to interact. Subscribe to Market Day News at a kiosk during Market Day or at a favorite vendor's location. If your vendor doesn't have a kiosk yet, suggest it!

Market Day will include demos, freebies, entertainment....the elements of a fair! Of course, you can also purchase items from merchants participating. ;) There will also be promotional objects there such as Midnight Mania, Lucky Chair, Lucky Cupcake etc. Stop by and meet some of SL's most dedicated merchants!

THIS IS A 23-HOUR EVENT, BEGINNING AT MIDNIGHT, CONCLUDING AT 11 PM THE SAME DAY!

Settled in

I'm Home!!!!!

Again. Well, That was fun, if you ever get the chance to buy land on transfer in SL, ... Um.. Don't. Run Away. (or at the very least, Keep in mind that if you are selling your Full Sim with a Homestead, Don't sell your Full Sim first, because you have to OWN a full sim in order to sell your Homestead).

~That being said..

After almost a full twelve days of being homeless, Due to a communication mix up, and some red tape at the Lab, the New Gull gallery is situated firmly, once again on the grid. Looking more like an old New England Brick and Stone Institution, and lovingly settled with its adjoining garden and soft sounds of waves and gulls, I believe the gallery has evolved into its best and most apropriate form yet.

Galilee Landing is a Full Sim and a combination of what was best about the two Homesteads I owned before. Gull Gallery, Aire Xaris studios, and Galilee, Sand Hill Cove. Continuing with their themes, Galilee Landing is a small Artist and Fishing community. On the East Side of the Sim, Visitors will find The New SandHill Cove Galleria, Where A beutiful build known as Old Wood Store made by Fornicola Butuzova of Prefabulous Homes, hosts Sezzy's Fashion Jewlery, Clothing and Mind's Eye, Unique gifts. Also in the Galleria, visitors will find a real working elevator that transports them to either the Beach or a the Seven Seas Fishing lake.

There are Shops in the Galleria, and Ad boards for rent as well.

HOMELESS

Yes, well...
Last Saturday, March 6, was the last time I ever saw Gull Gallery and Galilee:( Both Homesteads were sold, and are in the loving hands of their new Owners.
I have been waiting for my new Full Sim to be transferred onto the grid.
~ And waiting
.. And waiting.

Thank God for my Governor Linden cupboard! I miss my home :(

the New Sim will be called Galilee Landing, and will carry the same theme of a small RL Fishing and Art community in Narragansett Rhode island, Known as Point Judith. The Block Island Ferry will Take visitors over to a Small Island Called New Harbor where the North Light will feature a small gallery and pub.
Sezzy's clothing and Fashion jewelry will be on the mainland and a new shopping center Known as Sand Hill Cove Galleria will host a shopping mall, A cultural Arts common where visitors will be able to leave their LM and Slurls for free or rent out store space at the Boardwalk and Beach front boutiques.

Aire Xaris studios will be located in its own separate area and The Gallery itself, will be rebuilt, bigger and better than ever.

Its been a rough road this past week, and I'm not looking forward to sifting through that mess I call an inventory, but as soon as the Sim is ready and the Ribbon has been cut, I will post the new landmarks and links here.

Thank-you for your kind e-mails and notecards.
Aire

Flying

What the hell is this Second Life thing? I've come a long way since I stumbled across this place. I almost walked away half way through orientation Island when my computer froze up but through frustration, tapped the wrong keystroke and ended up flying.

The first teleport landed me on Freebie Island, and onto the back of a Pegasus...

And I've been here ever since.

I'm still "flying" around SL these days, but lately its been on the Back of my MLCC motorcycle, that I had customised by this really cool guy named Jett Skytower who seems to understand how to use the I Paint feature that comes with the newer MLCC Bikes. (A special symbol is displayed on the MLCC Vendors); Or you can just visit the MLCC headquarters.

I absolutely LOVE my bikes, and driving them on some of the creative Sims here in SL, So Much so that I redesigned my own two Homesteads to accommodate my passion.
Its not necessary to join any Bike clubs, or own your own Sim to rezz a bike. Some of the Sims that allow SL citizens to rezz thier own objects on their little stretch on the grid are very friendly and only have a couple of simple rules, one of course being, to have fun.
here are a few of my favorites:
Have fun, Remember to be respectful of other drivers, and The covenant of the Sim that you're on, and with a minimal amount of practice on your new bike, You'll be flying too!

Gull gallery and Galillee, the two Homesteads that I own, will become a full Sim on the grid.

The details of this move are still unknown, and i will be rebuilding, reorganizing, and probably changing Links, slurls, and gathering my objects into my inventory for the next month, but when everything is settled, I will post here there and everywhere to let you know.

The X street merchant statice will not change, because I will have a spot in world to keep at least a couple of magic boxes rezzed for delivery.

Thanks everybody.
